Karno is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated teammate to help develop the thermal energy business in Flanders, Belgium.

Karno is a young company that is revolutionizing the thermal energy market in Belgium. Gone are the days of individual boilers and gas or oil heating systems. Karno installs new collective and entirely renewable systems to supply new districts directly with heat and cooling. Karno develops, builds, finances, manages and operates zero-carbon thermal energy networks. 

Working location in downtown Brussels, with frequent movements across Flanders and sometimes the Benelux.

As the Energy Manager at KARNO, you will play a crucial role in optimising our thermal energy networks to ensure both environmental sustainability and economic performance of our assets. Your responsibilities will revolve around maximising efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring consumer comfort within our thermal energy systems. You will work closely with various stakeholders including thermal energy producers and consumers, thermal energy suppliers, electricity suppliers, network operators and network developers to achieve these goals.


Your Responsibilities : 

  1. Optimization of Thermal Energy Networks: Utilise data analysis and modelling techniques to optimise the operation of thermal energy networks. Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and implement strategies to maximise the performance of the networks.
  2. Environmental Performance: Develop and implement initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of our thermal energy systems. This includes optimising energy consumption in function of renewable production, consumption forecasts, storage capacity, ….
  3. Economic Performance: Monitor and analyse financial performance indicators of the thermal energy assets. Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to enhance the economic viability of the systems while maintaining affordability for consumers.
  4. Consumer Comfort: Collaborate with consumer representatives and gather feedback to ensure that thermal energy systems meet the comfort and reliability expectations of consumers, in line with the contractual obligations from all parties. Implement measures to address consumer concerns and enhance overall satisfaction with the services provided.
  5. Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated on relevant regulations and standards governing thermal energy systems. Ensure that our operations comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and proactively implement measures to mitigate any compliance risks.
  6. Technical Support and Maintenance planning: Provide technical expertise and support to engineering and maintenance teams involved in the operation and maintenance of thermal energy networks. Ensure that network maintenance and service interruptions are minimised and aligned with consumers and producers operational and contractual constraints.
  7. Reporting and Documentation: Prepare regular reports on the environmental and economic performance of thermal energy systems. Document optimization initiatives, energy savings, carbon footprint and other key metrics to track progress towards sustainability and efficiency goals.

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in engineering, business engineering, environmental science, or a related field
  • 3 years of proven experience in energy management, particularly within the thermal energy sector.
  • Strong understanding of thermal energy systems and markets, including heating and cooling technologies, distribution networks, energy efficiency,  measures, electricity and gas wholesale markets, electricity and gas end-user pricing, …
  • Proficiency in data analysis and modelling tools for optimization purposes
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal teams, external stakeholders, and consumers
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent knowledge of English and French or Dutch
